Andrew Hollenbach, Ph.D. was invited to give a series of lectures at Johns Hopkins University covering the topics LGBT Health Disparities and Writing of a Ruth L. Kirschstein NIH Training Grant.

Lucio Miele, M.D., Ph.D. was invited to be an associate editor of the journal Oncogene.

Microbiology, Immunology, and Parasitology 

Dr. Hong Xin was awarded a U.S. Department of Defense Grant: “Development of an Immunotherapeutic Delivery Platform Using Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells.”

MIP Graduate Student, Vincent Maffei (Taylor lab), was awarded an NIH F30 training grant: “Alcohol-associated Intestinal Dysbiosis and CD8+ T-cell Activation and Immunosenescence during HIV Infection.”

Dr. Chris Taylor was awarded an Air Force Research Laboratory Minority Leaders Research Collaboration Program Grant: “Investigation of Microbiome Changes in Deployed Individuals.”

Dr. Joy Sturtevant was selected as the recipient of the 2018 Aesculapian Excellence in Teaching Award in Basic Science for the L2 Fall Semester.

Hannah Albritton, MIP graduate student (Quayle lab), and Patricia Dehon, Postdoctoral Fellow (Amedee lab) were, respectively, oral and poster presentation winners at the recent Department of Medicine Graduate Research Day. Hannah’s presentation was entitled, “Cervical Chlamydia trachomatis-specific Immunoglobulin A from Infected Women Inversely Correlates with Bacterial Burden and Is Associated with Neutralization of Infection In Vitro.” Patricia’s poster was entitled “Longitudinal Impact of Chronic Binge Alcohol on Reservoir Establishment and Genital Shedding in SIV-Infected Female Rhesus Macaques.”


Dr. Anthony DiGiorgio (PGY-6) was honored with the Spine Summit 2018 Research Presentation Award during the 2018 Spine Summit Annual Meeting of the AANS/CNS Section of Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves which was held in Orlando, Florida during March 14-17, 2018.

Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery 

Dr. Moises Arriaga completed a term as President of the American Neurotology Society including leading the fall and spring Scientific meetings at the AAO-HNS fall meetings in Chicago and the combined Otolaryngology Spring meeting in Baltimore.

Dr. Moises Arriaga performed the first Middle Cranial Fossa Placement of a cochlear implant in a child with congenital inner and middle ear abnormalities. The surgery was performed as a collaboration with neurosurgery at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans and the device was programmed at Our Lady of the Lake Hearing and Balance Center. The patient was featured in the Baton Rouge and New Orleans Advocate.

Dr. Moises Arriaga was named in the National Best Doctors List and listed as Top Doc in New Orleans Magazine and Louisiana Life Magazine.

Dr. Adele Evans was appointed to the LAAP (LA AAP) State Committee on Government Affairs and the ASPO Research Committee.

Dr. Adele Evans lectured to local New Orleans Pediatricians on “Laryngomalacia”, March 2018.

Dr. Melda Kunduk received Visiting Professorship Program Travel Award to Universitatsklinikum Erlangen/Germany- Research visit to in August 2018 to University Hospital Erlangen, Medical School, Department of Phoniatrics and Pediatric Audiology at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery, PI: Drs M. Doellinger and M. Kunduk, Funding: 3/2018, Award: €2610

Dr. Andrew McWhorter and Dr. Melda Kunduk received Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center/ Favre Family Award for Innovation, “Taste, Saliva and Swallowing: Ingredients for Nutritional Success in Head and Neck Cancer”, Co–PIs; VShivers., MVansant*., DLarson*., AJ McWhorter,. M. Kunduk, Funded: 3/21/2018, Award: $15.000

The LSU Department of Otolaryngology spearheaded by Dr. Rohan Walvekar with LSU Medical Students held an Oral Cancer Screening at Perino’s Nursery, Metairie, La, March 11, 2018.


Luke Wall, MD was elected to the Southern Society for Pediatric Research’s Council during February’s annual SSPR conference. Dr. Wall is our LSUHSC-New Orleans institutional representative for SSPR and will now serve on the council, SSPR’s governing body. Also at SSPR, Rachel Herdes, DO received the Cardiovascular Case Report Award for her platform presentation titled Casting Light on Plastic Bronchitis: An Inside Look at Complications Following Fontan Palliation.

Jovanny Zabaleta, MS, PhD recently received a 2018 American Association for Cancer Research Minority and Minority-Serving Institution Faculty Scholar in Cancer Research Award. The grant will cover Dr. Zabaleta’s travel expenses to the AACR Annual Meeting in Chicago this month.

Steffan Sernich, MD has been selected as a CityBusiness 2018 Health Care Hero. The local business newspaper honors 50 health care professionals in the New Orleans area each year, selecting them based on industry and community involvement and achievement. Dr. Sernich will be profiled in the special insert of the May 25 issue of New Orleans CityBusiness.


Dr. Scott Edwards received the Beverly Petterson Bishop Award for Excellence in Neuroscience from the CNS section of the American Physiology Society. The award provides $20,000 for use in Dr. Edwards’ research program.

On January 26th, Dr. Scott Edwards facilitated a discussion on “Alcohol & Drug Abuse: Separating Fact from Myth” on the downtown campus. The event was sponsored by the LSUHSC Alcohol & Drug Abuse Center of Excellence and coincided with NIAAA/NIDA’s National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week.

On February 26th, Dr. Scott Edwards was appointed to be the next Section Editor of the Substance Abuse Section for the journal Pharmacology, Biochemistry, and Behavior. The transition will formally take place in the fall of 2018.

Effective March 1st, Dr. Scott Edwards has been appointed to the Biomedical Laboratory Research & Development Service and the Clinical Science Research & Development Service (BLRD/CSRD) Intramural VA Program.

In March, Dr. Stefany Primeaux was appointed as an Associate Editor for the journal Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy.

In March, Darryl Gaudet, a Master’s student in Dr. Stefany Primeaux’s lab, successfully defended his thesis.
